The China National Center for Protein Sciences is one of the nine projects of National Large Research Infrastructures established during the 11th Five-Year Plan period. It's also the first project in the field of life sciences and medicine among universities nationwide.

Tsinghua University Branch of China National Center for Protein Sciences Beijing mainly utilizes cryo-electron microscopy as the major research tool and integrates three structure analysis methods, namely “X-ray crystallography - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy - Cryo-electron microscopy”, and the initial fund of equipment is RMB300 million.

Based on the construction of Tsinghua University Branch of China National Center for Protein Sciences Beijing, Technology Center for Protein Sciences of Tsinghua University was established in 2015. The Protein Center consists of twelve facilities and serves as a university-level research and public service platform.

The center was officially established in 2012. It passed the acceptance by the Ministry of Education in July 2017, and it completed the national acceptance by the end of November 2018.

The Protein Center has been established as a world-leading laboratory and research platform in cryo-electron microscopy and structural biology research.
